Give blood on Wednesday at Alabama State University and get a free ticket to the largest and most fun-filled HBCU football game in the entire nation - The Magic City Classic.
Alabama State University's office of Housing and Residence Life is partnering with the American Red Cross in asking both the ASU family and the River Region community to become someone’s hero by donating blood on Wednesday (Oct. 17), from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at ASU’s John Garrick Hardy Student Center in its Union Cyber Café Lounge.
As a token of appreciation, blood donors will receive a FREE TICKET to the 77th Annual Magic City Classic in Birmingham, said Reginal Lorick, assistant director of Housing and Residence Life, which is the sponsor of the blood drive. The Magic City Classic will be played at Birmingham's Legion Field on Oct. 27, between ASU and Alabama A & M.
“We urge the community...to continue to support the American Red Cross by being among the blood donors throughout the United States who help the Red Cross fulfill its lifesaving mission,” Lorick said.
According to the American Red Cross, 70 percent of African-Americans have type O or B blood, the blood types most in demand.
Lorick said the statistics show why African-American blood donors are vital.
“Giving critical lifesaving blood to area patients in need of blood transfusions and for those with conditions like sickle cell disease gives someone a second chance at life,” he said.
"However, all blood types are needed," Lorick said, "to ensure a reliable supply for patients."
“During the flu season and bad winter weather, the American Red Cross has a critical need for blood donors to give to address a winter blood shortage,” Lorick said.
