Lead as the new Advanced Light Source Director for the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory! (11533 hits)

Berkeley Lab is looking for a dynamic leader to serve as Director of the Advanced Light Source.

The Advanced Light Source (ALS) is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national scientific user facility. The ALS's excellent scientific reputation, expert staff, and capabilities in the soft X-ray, hard X-ray, and infrared regimes attract more than 2,000 academic and industrial users each year in disciplines spanning physical, chemical, materials, biological, energy, and Earth sciences. ALS is one of five Berkeley Lab operated DOE user facilities that serve a combined 11,000 users annually. The co-location of these facilities – including the Molecular Foundry Nanoscale Science Research Center and the NERSC scientific computing center, as well as Berkeley Lab's outstanding programs in materials and chemical sciences among others – offers a prime environment for collaborative science.

In this critical role, the new ALS Director will join Berkeley Lab’s senior leadership team and provide scientific vision and leadership for the ALS. The Director (1) is responsible for delivering ~5000 hours per year of safe and reliable storage ring operation, and overseeing an annual operations budget of over $65 million and a staff of over 200 employees; (2) has full responsibility for all areas of management within the ALS, including scientific research, operations, finance, human resources, and safety; (3) oversees the technical management team and the Deputies for Science and Operations who are responsible for day-to-day operations of the ALS; (4) maintains a vibrant ALS user program and responds to the needs of the user community by developing and executing strategic plans for beamlines, accelerator projects, and staffing, to maintain ALS at the forefront of soft X-ray science; and (5) maintains a culture of excellence and inclusion by recruiting and retaining outstanding employees – including scientists and engineers in strategic areas of basic research – and enthusiastically supporting and promoting their careers. The Director is advised by the ALS Scientific Advisory Committee, the Users’ Executive Committee, and the Proposal Study Panels.

The ALS Director will also play an essential role in ensuring the success of the Advanced Light Source Upgrade (ALS-U) project and the future of the ALS beyond the project, partnering closely with the ALS-U Project Director to facilitate the successful completion of the project, while maintaining the excellent scientific user program of the ALS and maximizing the scientific impact of the upgraded ALS facility.

The ALS Director is a member of the executive team of the Energy Sciences Area, a group of four Berkeley Lab Divisions that is primarily funded by the Basic Energy Sciences program of the DOE Office of Science. In this role the Director should build collaborative partnerships and programs within the Energy Sciences Area, with other Divisions at Berkeley Lab, and with external research institutions. Other important responsibilities include collaborating with LBNL Divisions whose staff are matrixed to the ALS or who operate beamlines, acting as a spokesperson for the ALS in interactions with the DOE, and articulating the ALS mission to visitors and the public at large.
